TRE®: Tension / Trauma Release Exercises

TRE® is a useful tool in processing emotional, physical and psychological stress, tension & trauma.

TRE® is easy and simple to learn. It’s also a natural process that all mammals are able to utilise. Unfortunately, humans have learned to suppress the body’s natural tremor reflex, seeing it as a sign of weakness.

TRE® is a body based (somatic) process. It uses a series of simple exercises, which can allow you to discharge tension held in the body. So there is no need for you to verbally or cognitively “revisit the story”.

It assists in grounding the body, creating a sense of calm and increased resilience in face of life’s daily stressors.

How stress, anxiety & trauma affect the body.

Our autonomic nervous system (the part that keeps us breathing without having to think) reacts to any experience of stress or trauma. It prepares us for fight to flight, and when it believes there is no way out, it reverts to the freeze response.

If you have experienced complex trauma (repeated and ongoing, perhaps as a child or in an abusive relationship) you may find you flip flop from freeze (depressed, detached, empty) to fight/flight (rage, anger, panic, fear). I lived in this space for many years. TRE® assisted me in releasing much of this trauma, giving me the opportunity to build resilience and reconnect with my body.

TRE® assists in completing the trauma process in the body. If you weren’t able to fight or flee, TRE® assists in completing the autonomic process started in the body, helping to reduce symptoms of PTSD, and increase resilience to further stressors.
